Q:  How much wind can a retractable awning withstand?

A:  The simple answer is anywhere from 15-30mph.  However, the strength of the model you choose, as well as the pitch/slope of the awning will determine exactly how much wind your awning can handle.  Typically, more slope on the awning means more tolerance to the wind.  Proper mounting height is critical to the performance of your awning.  Flat awning are susceptible to being picked up.

Q:  How much rain can a retractable awning withstand?

A:  Simple answer, a light to moderate rain is tolerable.  As long as the fabric doesn’t develop puddles of pools of standing water, everything is fine.  Water should be running down and off of the fabric.  Mounting height and pitch are the final determinants, are you starting to see a theme?

Q:  What is the Lifespan of a Retractable awning?

A:  Usually 15 years is a basic guideline, but you should expect more.  Fabric can be replaced to re-energize the awning, but occasional maintenance or a quick cleaning will go a long way to extend the life of your awning.  We’ve seen awnings fully functional 25+ years after installation!

Q:  When should I consider a motorized awning?

A:  We would always suggest a motor for the simple fact that you will use the awning more, and care for it better.  You will be much more inclined to take full advantage of the awning when you can press a button to open or close it.  The time and exertion that it takes to manually extend or retract it will leave you less motivated to open or close the awning throughout the day.  That would leave it susceptible to gusty winds, surprise downpours, and lazy summer afternoon naps.  While most any size awning can operate manually, a motor will make your life that much easier.  Larger awnings require more effort as you may have guessed.  While it’s not absolutely imperative, an awning larger than 16′ wide x 10’6″ projection should have a motor.
